Climate Smart Claverack (CSC) commissioned an energy audit for the Town Garage. The completed report was submitted to the town on June 19th. The CSC committee applied for Decarbonization grants from Hudson Valley Partners for Climate Action, New World Foundation and NYSERDA. The awarded grants fully paid for the audit.

Here are some of the recommendations the audit made:
As with all building energy retrofits and upgrades, it is important as a first step to make sure the building is as well sealed and insulated as possible. Then when you add renewable heating or cooling you can be assured the building is operating as efficiently as possible.
Sample recommendations from the audit.
All the work we did to collect data on the Heat Pump campaign, (shout out to Bob Duggan!) meant that Claverack was eligible for 3 grants totalling $25,000. We spoke with the town board, and they agreed to endorse our committee’s suggestion that we apply the money for the grants to the envelope improvements to the Town Garage.
According to the audit this will save the town $5,000 per year in fuel costs. Because the town will only need to pay $14,836 the payback will be just under 3 years! This is an important first step in a multi-year plan to reduce Claverack’s carbon footprint, convert to renewable energy and lower our energy cost.
